Where Debra lived in Alphen - 23 Vondelstraat

Vondelstraat 23, Alphen aan den Rijn

It brought back instant and emotional memories for Debra. We said hello to her next door neighbour who still lives there.

Nice drive outside of Alphen aan den Rijn

We had a very nice drive in the countryside around Alphen. We made sure to take a few pictures of the Podlood in Nieuwkoop for Dad R. Rienus and Audrey were great showing us around and telling us about places and events in the past when the Rijvers kids were growing up. Tasty tidbits about Freddie and Jaap.

The Rijn from Rienus and Audrey's house

The boats pass right by. I will try and get one of the huge ones on video as it is surprising seeing one so big go by.

easyJet to Amsterdam

We had to be up at 4 am Monday morning to catch a taxi at 4:50 for a 6:50 am flight. All went well, but we think the cabbie overcharged and we realized that a 'SpeedyPass' is the way to go with discount airlines. Leaving 20 degree sunny Madrid for 12 degree rainy and windy Holland was quite the switch. However we were greeted by Debra's Aunt and Uncle and after a short walk, their warm car for the ride to Alphen.

Off to Holland and then Barcelona

We will be in Alphen for a couple of days and then back to Madrid. We then will be driving to Barcelona on Wednesday. I do not know if we will have internet access.

El Rastro

This open air market is on every Sunday. It was chock full crowded but Debra and I enjoyed it and picked up a few things. The weather continues to be about 10 degrees higher than normal. Very pleasant.

Real Madrid v Racing Santander - at the Bernabeu

We took the Metro (subway) to the famous Bernabeu to watch Real Madrid play. They won 1-0 and the game, stadium and crowd were all that I had hoped for and more. We sat high on the fifth level, but there is not a poor seat in the stadium. The only drawback was that they allow smoking (and the locals love their cigarettes) and Debra and Paul not comfortable about the height of the seats. The Spanish are passionate about their football and sing, cheer and whistle incessantly and loudly. (the only way to watch a match I say)

Saturday in the Puerta del Sol

A late start to the day (not surprising after getting in at 6:30 am). Madrid, like London and Paris, is packed on a Saturday. People everywhere. This shot is taken looking down Calle Mayor.

Reception Menu

Apologies for the menu photo making you turn your head or monitor sideways. This was the most amazingly good food we have ever had at a wedding.

The Reception

The long drive out was immediately forgotten as we pulled up in front of this beautiful old castle. As we entered, the waiters were circulating with trays of drinks and appetizers. The bride and groom endured endless best wishes and photo shoots throughtout the night. Dinner started at 11 pm and around 1 pm music and dancing started. It was a great mix of Spanish and North American dance music. The Spanish people are passionate, energetic and love to have fun. The party ended at 5 am and yes, we both lasted. It was an amazing experience and one we will not soon forget.
